Why join a High Sight discipleship group?

Hello! We are so glad you are interested in wanting to participate in a High Sight Discipleship Group this Fall.

We want you to be involved in a discipleship group this Fall because we believe that fellowship is a non-negotiable element that must exist in the life of a Jesus follower. In Acts 2, we see the early church being desribed as a people that were committed to fellowship with one another. We believe that joining a discipleship group is a way to be intentional to engage in fellowship with other believers.

We want each of our high school students to regularly be involved in a discipleship group during the Fall of 2024! Here's what you need to know:

STEP 1:  Read through "What is a High Sight discipleship group?"

STEP 2: Read through "What is the time commitment?"

STEP 3: Spend some time praying and chatting with your parents/guardians about it.

STEP 4: If you can commit to this, then fill out this form before the end of July 2024! If you cannot commit this due to time constraints, then don't worry, we will slot you into a discipleship group on the Wednesdays that you can be at High Sight this Fall!

What is a High Sight discipleship group?

A High Sight discipleship group is a group of 6-10 High Sight students led by 2-3 adult High Sight leaders. Most often, High Sight discipleship groups consist of all female students/leaders or all male students/leaders. Occasionally, a married couple (that are High Sight leaders) may lead a discipleship group of all female students or all male students.

In
order for discpleship groups to be effective three components are necessary:
1. Transparency, 2. Commitment and 3. Consistency.

1. Transparency: In order to become an effective disciple of Jesus, we must not only learn what Jesus wants us to do but we must also confront our areas of weakness or sin. These areas often hinder us from being obedient to Jesus. The only way to do this is to be real, or transparent, with our lives. Confronting the sin in your life on your own is good, but being transparent about it in the midst of community so that your discpleship group can keep you accountable and offer support is one of the most effective ways to have a victory and succeed in becoming a disciple of Jesus. This is why a portion of the time will be spent being real, encouraging each other and supporting one another. In doing so, you will find you are not alone.

2. Commitment: In addition to spending time being real, we will read books together, go through a book of the Bible together, or study a particular topic. These will require you to read or study on your own which will require up to an additoonal hour each week outside of Wednesday nights. In the group, we will be discussing what we read and the Leader will be using the content of what you read during the week to challenge the group. If you haven't read or studied, this process is more difficult. So, Commitment is paramount.

3. Consistency: It is important that you make this time a priority in your life. You should treat it as an appointment that you would normally not break unless there was an emergency. The reason for this is that as you begin to meet as a group week after week, a dynamic relationship between the group begins to form. Not only is it hard for this relationship to form if you are not consistent, but it also throws off the dynamic if you are not there. This is why consistency is so important. Occasionally missing a meeting due to something really important is no big deal, especially if you communicate ahead of time to your leader, but missing a meeting because you and a friend really wanted to go see a movie is not ok and may get you dismissed from the group.
What is the time commitment?

Each discipleship group will meet for 30-45 minutes on Wednesday nights. Wednesday nights are centered around discpleship groups and are our primary relational connecting point. On Wednesday nights, we have an abbreviated corporate worship/teaching time and then break into discipleship groups.

Occasionally, there may be additional meeting times or outings that take place outside of Wednesday nights as well.

The High Sight discipleship group will meet for the duration of the Fall 2024 school semester (August-December). By signing up for a Fall discipleship group, you are committing to 15 of 18 of the following Wednesday nights. (Please use your family, school, work, and sports schedule to help you make this decision):

8/14, 8/21, 8/28, 9/4, 9/11, 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/12, 11/20, 12/4, 12/11, & 12/18. (We will be off for 11/27 and 12/25 for Thanksgiving and Christmas).

Parents

It is important to us that you are well informed as to your students involvement in discipleship groups. Not only can you encourage them to be consistent and committed, but you will also, most likely, be instrumental in helping them get to and from discipleship group. Because of this it would be impossible for them to commit to being involved without you also committing as well. Therefore, we would ask that you too review the discipleship group description. If you approve of the required time commitment and will agree to help them fulfill their commitment through encouragement and by transporting them, please mark below.
